It’s the Lyrics That Catch You

Today’s post is merely opinion.  One thing I always do is look up the lyrics to my favorite songs.  We all do it.  It’s so you can sing along without getting to that point in the song to where you mumble and move your lips a lot in hopes your friends don’t call you out.  I also look up lyrics so I can see the beauty in the imagery of each phrase.  I know I’ve made mentions in previous post about certain lyrics that stand out in my mind from the bands we’ve reviewed.  There are certain bands for me that I love all of their lyrics, like Rise Against.  I feel like Rise Against puts a powerful message in everyone of their songs.  The music video for Make It Stop was just released Tuesday.  The song itself talks about teen suicide which is sadly on the rise.  This music video brings attention to the bullying problem all over right now it is also to help support the It Gets Better project.  If you’d like to check out the It Gets Better Project go to http://www.itgetsbetter.org

There are other bands we like and know their songs but when you look at their lyrics they don’t make sense.  Fall Out Boy is an example of this.  If you look up the lyrics they have catchy verses and nice wordplay but all together they make no sense.  This isn’t to say I don’t like Fall Out Boy, it’s just an example.  I really enjoy seeing the misheard lyric videos for songs and then that’s all you can hear when you listen to their song.

There are also those lyrics that bring back a memory or remind you of that one friend or special person in your life.  It’s not until you hear those few words sung together that you finally have that memory of riding the bus to a cross country meet and you feel 15 again.

I’m discovering new bands everyday and with them come new and exciting lyrics.  The Maddigans- “You can buy a million red roses, scratch that, make them golden, but I won’t take it back.” Late Nite Reading “I regret what I’ve written.  Everything sounds the same.  These feelings are so typical and too cliche’ to say.”   Armistice- “So what are we gonna do when all you think about is you.” These are just a few from the bands we’ve already reviewed.  There are so many amazingly poetic lyrics out their, you just have to listen.

So my question to you is what are some of your favorite lyrics or verses from songs.  The one I always get stuck in my head are from First Date by Blink-182 because it reminds me of my first girlfriend.  Are there certain ones you always sing in the shower or is there one song stuck in your head and you just can’t it out?  Let us know.

This is also a shout out to Janai to write her own post on her favorite lyrics and maybe some bands she’s found recently 🙂 you’re move.

Approaching Summer

Summer is approaching and that means outdoor concerts and cranking up the music while you drive around.  I’m very excited for summer to start because I feel like there are songs and bands that are better to listen to during the summer rather than winter, or even when it’s raining compared to being sunny out.  I feel like every song and every band has an atmosphere that their music works better in.  I listen to Way To Start This by The Maddigans and I imagine being at an outdoor concert.  I listen to Armistice and imagine being in one of those cool rock clubs that have surprise concerts.  Same with Late Nite Reading.  The first lines of Walk of Shame by Finding the Warren are “sitting there in your track tshirt, take in the morning dusk.”.  These lyrics send me back to sitting on my porch, watching the the sunrise while I listened to my ipod.  I also like listening to songs that don’t fit the mood of the day.  I listened to High Life Scenery by The Rocket Summer the other day while walking through the rain.  I felt like the upbeat sound of the music with the calming, dreary look of the environment was some how relaxing.  All these bands get me excited for the summer and I’m excited to find some new music.  Who are you listening to as you roll down your windows and take off to the pool, beach, or friends house for a 24 hour call of duty marathon?  Let us know.  Thanks again to all of our readers.  I’ll give a shout out to my fellow blogger Eric Sylvester who is moving up in the world of writing.  If you haven’t checked it out and want to read some random thoughts check out Sylvester Says and another inspiration of mine, who Mr. Sylvester turned me on to, Chris Cocca.  Both of these guys are quite hilarious and an inspiration to me.  Check them out and check us out too.  Leave a comment, follow us on twitter, like us on Facebook, and even just spread the word about us.

Finding the Warren Review

I know we have fallen behind on our reviews but the end of the semester means busier schedules.  I also know the band I am reviewing is no longer together, but I feel like these guys still have amazing music and should be looked into.  Finding the Warren is a band out of Des Moines, IA.  I first saw these guys when I went to go see Cute is What We Aim For.  Turns out CIWWAF didn’t show up but I saw Every Avenue and this amazing band, Finding the Warren.  It was exciting to know these guys came from the heart of my home state and were performing with performing with such big bands.  The thing that really stood out for these guys to me was their keyboard sound.  The whole band is full of energy and gets you pumped right away.  They have an EP you can listen to on their Myspace.  My favorite song by these guys has been Tonight Ends with a Bang.  These guys have a great sound and I wish they were still making music.  Let us know other bands you like that aren’t together anymore.  Maybe with enough support they’ll get back together!

Just Random Thoughts

So last night I was looking outside.  I had my window open and I just had my old tank top and shorts on.  The reason I mention all of this is because each brought back random memories.  I think it is just amazing how smells, sights, and sounds can all bring back memories from random points in your life.  It was so beautiful out that there was people sitting out playing frisbee, catch, and even flying a kite.  I also got to see a movie stereotype in real life.  You know in those college movies where you see the guy barefoot, sitting in the grass with two girls, while he played guitar.  I really wanted to sit down with them and do annoying things like clap way off beat and request songs while he played.  I know it seems rude but I just couldn’t believe something like that happened in real life.  I guess the stereotype had to start somewhere.  Being able to finally put on shorts and a tank top again took me back to the beginning of school and so I felt care-free.  I forgot about finals coming up and I forgot about all the homework I still had to do.  It felt absolutely amazing to be able to relax.  I actually threw my itunes on shuffle and cleaned up my place.  It was nights like last night that made me really just love life.

I’d like to apologize for our lack of reviews lately.  Both Janai and I have been swamped lately.  That’s what made last night even better.  Finally getting a breather.  Don’t worry, though.  We’ll be getting back on track this week and we have some great bands lined up.  We are also editing videos for you guys.  Let us know what you think.  Have a great week stereo students.
