What I’m Listening To

So lately I’ve started paying attention to what I’m listening to.  First off I’ve been listening to the two new singles Architects and Help Is On the Way from Rise Against.  Their new album End Game hits stores March 15th.  This will be a must buy for me because they are my all time favorite band.  Next on the list is the band We Are the In Crowd and The Best Week Ever.  These bands have a back and forth between a punk rock sounding female and male vocal.  I am a big fan of We Are the In Crowd for their lyrics and the overall sound.  I definitely listen to them when I’m driving around town with the windows down.  They get me pumped and excited to go where ever I’m going.  Next up is Panic! at the Disco’s single The Ballad of Mona Lisa.  This is the single for their new album Vices $ Virtues which will be available March 22nd.  The final thing I want to note is Runner Runner’s new album.  These guys have an amazing sound that is under appreciated.  They need fans help to stay alive in the music industry.  I highly suggest everyone to go buy their new album not just because they need help from us as music lovers, but because it is an amazing album.  Their new album is the kinda music I would bring on a road trip.  It keeps spirits high and everyone starts singing.

That’s what Ive been listening to lately.  There is plenty of other stuff in there, but those are just a few I felt needed recognition.  Who have you been listening to lately?  Leave a comment and let us know and as always, check out our reviews and let us know what you think.

Nocturna Review

Noctura is a female fronted rock band hailing from my very own Indianapolis.  They are heavy rock with an emo twist.  This band has a very dark feel to them but not in a bad way.  Anybody that is a fan of Evanescence or Paramore is going to fall head over converse for these guys.  Three members strong and heading for a record deal these guys are moving.  Unfortunately I think this band is going to run into the same criticism that Cassidy Pope, from Hey Monday did.  How close Mandy (Lead singer) sounds to Amy Lee.  She has an incredible talent but it’s going to be a pretty close comparison.   I’m not sure I can tell the difference between the two.  However I love her vocals.  The lyrics are what really get me though.  She writes lyrics that make you want to cry and at the same time you know exactly what she is talking about.  I can’t over how much the sound is similar.   Noctura has also putting out entirely fan funded upcoming Debut album.  I love this idea because it shows how important the fans truly are to them.  My favorite song from the new album is Don’t Save Me. This song is the most like Evanescence.  I like however.   I’m all down for this band and I want them to succeed but I feel like they are going to have a harder time due to the sound similarities.  So that why we as fans have to back them up and help them get going!!

Nocturna is a band from Indianapolis, Indiana.  They have a very strong female lead with a very good rock sound.  They are working on releasing an album that is fan funded which is very unique way of putting an album and it definitely show the fans care.  I really do like their sound and their lyrics are very well put.  The problem I have with this band is they sound so much like Evanescence.  I say this only because I feel like they are going to hit a wall of “they sound too much like another band”.  They have a good sound but it isn’t unique enough to help them stand out among the crowd.  With the music industry looking for new sounds every day, it’s becoming more and more difficult to get recognized.  Having a fan funded album is a great start, and they really do sound great, but I feel like I could play Evanescence and not even notice the difference.   There album is suppose to hit stores early 2011.

This Week’s Review

This week we’ll be reviewing Noctura.  Check them out and see if you agree with our feelings about them!  Our review will be up Thursday night!

Thank You Artists

This is a thank you to all the artists out there.  Thank you for putting a mood or feelings into something we can listen to when we feel happy or sad.  You gave me something to listen to when I couldn’t find the words myself.  I always took one night a month to just sit in my room and listen to my Ipod on shuffle.  I didn’t skip a song or pick an artist.  I just let the ipod go.  I found it was a great way to relax and unwind from stress.  Every singer and song writer helps someone in some way just by writing a song.  Some songs have more meaning than others but some of the songs just help us get through the day.  Music is the fuel that gets me through the day and I know I’m not the only one.  Music is what I use to help bring back memories.  I listen to First Date by Blink 182 and think of my first girlfriend, I listen to Everything by Michael Buble and I think of my family, and I listen to Hey There Delilah by Plain White T’s and it reminds me of one of the greatest nights of my life.  Music is a time capsule, a therapist, and and a stress reliever.  Thank you to all the musicians out there.  You don’t truly know how much you’ve helped people like me in this world just by doing what you’re good at.  Thank you.  How has music helped you out in life?  What is music to you?  Leave a comment and let us know.  -James

“Classic” songs

Something that bugs me is when I call a song a classic, and people disagree because they say the song isn’t old enough to be a classic.  My definition of a classic song or album is one you can go back to at any time and feel like it is a good song.  I can listen to Riot! by Paramore, Welcome to the Black Parade by My Chemical Romance, One-X by Three Days Grace, or Infinity on High by Fall Out Boy and I consider them all classics.  I’m not saying those are any of the bands best albums, I’m saying I know those albums inside and out and can listen to them at any time.  I consider them a foundation for everything else I listen to.  I started with those albums and branched out.  I now have a very wide variety of music, but I can go back to certain albums and it takes me back to when I was first listening to music of my choice compared to what the radio was playing or what someone else wanted to listen to.  Remember that first cd that you bought?  Remember how many times you listened to it?  You had the track list memorized, and could play any song and within 5 seconds, if not less, you knew which song it was.  That is a classic to me.  What are some classic albums for you?  What was the first cd you bought?  What is a classic to you?

Armistice Review

Armistice is a band out of Portland, ME.  This band is just starting out with little shows along the upper east coast, but they already have a great sound.  The lead vocals are strong and they play well off each other.  They currently have two songs available on their Facebook page for free download which you can find at the bottom of this review.  I love the vocals to this band.  They have a good punk rock sound and I can see these guys touring with bands like All Time Low and Mayday Parade.  I feel like all these guys need are fans like us to help support them and get their name out there.  These guys have been very friendly to us.  We were happy they let us review them and we hope you check out their page.  I can’t wait to see what else they come up with.

-James

Armistice is a new and upcoming band from the mighty state of Maine.  Playing with bands such as Stop is the New Go, Spark the Rescue and Too Late the Hero.  They are a group of three very talented young people.  Andrew “Scribz” Soucy, Allison Orr, and Nate Berry make up this deep punk rock trio.  They have a deeper and much slower vibe than most of the out in your face punk rock groups but it’s good.  It’s almost the calm before a revolution feel.   Between the vocals and the bass I’m not sure what draws you in more.  The band just recently played a show with Love be a Dance Machine.  This little band for Maine is looking for fans too.  Usually I’m against jumping on the band wagon but here you going to want a running start.  This band is going to take off.  The band has only two songs out but is looking for an EP release this spring.  I’m looking forward to it

The Maddigans Review

I’ve been listening to The Maddigans over and over again for the last three days.  With a strong front female vocal,  this band from Canada is looking to swing stateside.  I’m all for it.  I’m ready to hear them blasting from my 1998 Mercury Sable.  This band combines a unique voice with insane guitar riffs with a dash of techno.  I’m in love with these guys/gals.  The Maddigans will easily be a band that will have every girl singing away.   They have an interesting sound that really does keep you guessing.  The lyrics are also awesome.  She tells stories, and says things you really wish you could say.  The world had better be ready to take on this power pop band.  I feel like this band is going to be big.  You’re defiantly going to want to be able to say you listen to them before they get big.  These guys are going to be hot.  My personal favorite from their new album is Diamond Rings and Pretty Things.   The lyrics are just so spot on.  They will be going on tour this summer.  Listen to them, love them. : )

The Maddigans.  This punk/pop band from Edmonton, Alberta has a great female lead vocal backed up by great guitar/bass and an amazing drumming that just makes you want to jump around like you’re at your own personal concert.    Their EP Way To Start This starts off with an upbeat drum pounding the excitement into you.  Then the smooth beat of the bass joins it and Trisha Watson brings you in with her beautiful vocals.  This is all in just the first four seconds.  You can feel your body wanting to jump and dance to this album.  My favorite song on this album is the second track which is actually the title track called Way To Start This.  This song just makes me want to jump and down to the beat.  I really enjoy songs that add in sounds like “dadada”.  I also enjoy how each song on this album has a different sound.  You can definitely distinguish between each track, compared to some bands where you have to wait a little while until you can figure it out.  You can always distinguish the sound of this band though.  I put my Ipod on shuffle was able to tell every time it was them.  This combination of having such a unique, upbeat sound and they’re determined but friendly attitude, this band is going to go far with the help of people like us spreading the word.  You can buy this album on Itunes for $4.95 now!  I highly suggest it.
